Song Art Museum used to be a private jockey club that was originally made up of Victorian buildings and western-style gardens. Nowadays, just like a lady with too much made up, the architectural style was beginning to look anachronistic. In terms of reconstruction, the original intention of the host is to transform its function into an art space that can be appreciated by the public. The first thing we did is to remove all the complicated decorations and show themselves in the purest form.
The main body of the building unfolds like a long scroll, this time, we redesign the connection between it and the courtyard. There are 199 pine trees meticulously trimmed and planted in between and the new art museum has become the main body of the building which surrounded by the restoration of ancient buildings and memorial gates. In this way, It not only meets the host's interest of art collection but also shows the orientation of the Oriental Art Museum.
“Blank-leaving”, an expression that represents the most artistic Chinese art conception, by contrast, geometric is the most objective expression of western logical thinking. In terms of building, all the western symbols have been removed and only left pure white. The art museum is connected by several different geometric buildings, creating a new corridor in order to connect all the elements in the area, and echoes the courtyard. Vertical open space has been created from above to below, giving the building a more dimensional extension. The meaning of the art museum is to display artworks, as a platform for presentation, we regard ”Sony Art Museum” as an “Artistic Vessel” which means the entire building is also an artwork. Consider that the building would be copied in the future, we already left enough space to allow change happened from the aspect of architecture and space.
The design principle of Song Art Museum is to turn everything into geometric and pure white, showing “Inaction” from outside to inside. “Clean” is what we are trying to create in the museum, when all kinds of contemporary arts displayed, the pure white design highlights the exhibits and lets the consumer focus on them. Surrounding by the pine trees gives the external life to the Song Art Museum. A balance between artworks and views outside has been built and oriental freehand brushwork in traditional Chinese has become the natural rhythm that consists of traditional and contemporary architecture.
